Clinical Skills for Addressing Co-Occurring Disorders

As co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders become increasingly common, mental health professionals must be prepared to address both diagnoses in tandem. This comprehensive seminar equips mental health practitioners with advanced clinical skills for accurately diagnosing, engaging, and supporting clients experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Participants will explore evidence-based assessment techniques, integrated treatment approaches, and specialized intervention strategies that address the complex interplay between mental health and substance use conditions. The seminar includes detailed case studies, hands-on skill-building exercises, and collaborative development of treatment planning.

This training will be co-led by Maggie Giles, Chair of the Counseling and Psychology Department, Lesley University, and Devin Stephenson, Clinical Director, Victory Programs—both alumni of Lesley University.

An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

As many clients struggle with ambivalence and resistance to change, practitioners often find it challenging to engage clients effectively and motivate lasting behavior change. This seminar offers in-depth training in motivational interviewing (MI), a client-centered, strength-based approach proven to enhance engagement and support meaningful change. Participants will explore the foundational principles of MI and develop practical skills in building rapport, eliciting change talk, and guiding clients toward self-directed actions. Through role-playing, case analysis, and hands-on practice with core techniques like reflective listening, affirmations, and strategic questioning, attendees will gain the skills needed to foster stronger therapeutic relationships and help clients achieve lasting, transformative outcomes.

This training will be co-led by Maggie Giles, Chair of the Counseling and Psychology Department, Lesley University, and Devin Stephenson, Clinical Director, Victory Programs—both alumni of Lesley University.
