"The Long Desired Medium: The History of Oil Painting"
This is a history of the invention and spread of oil paint through Europe. In it I discuss how oil was discovered as a painting medium in the Netherlands, its rapid adaptation in Italy, and the innovations of Titian and Giorgione. I describe the difference between the central Italian vs the Venetian approaches to the medium and how they were interpreted by painters from the baroque periods to the early twentieth century. It is fully illustrated with many close up images that illustrate the ways these artists moved their paint around on the canvas.
