Silas Munro's masterclass, titled "On the Consideration of a Black Grid," promises a deep dive into the rich tapestry of possibilities within Black modernism and design. From the Johnson Publishing Company's headquarters to the monumental canvases of Adam Pedelton, Munro explores the diverse matrix of what he considers to be a Black Grid. Building on the work of design scholar Audrey G. Bennett, Munro traces a lineage of fractal ingenuity from Sub-Saharan Cameroon to the Bauhaus art school, examining how grids can shape Black liberatory forms. This visual essay reflects Munro's meandering journey to see himself as a Black designer and artist within pedagogies that often overlook diverse perspectives.

These classes are part of the Teach-In on Equity Series, which represents Lesley University's commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable community. Art and Design will kick off this three-year annual series featuring Silas Munro. The masterclasses are set to inspire dialogue, skill-building, and creativity among students, faculty, and the broader community.

This is a two-part class, held on Monday, March 4 from 8-11:45 am and on Tuesday, March 5 from 1:15-5 pm. To attend, please email meta.newhouse@lesley.edu by February 22 to secure your spot.
