Join us on February 13, 2025 for LaForge, Sweetie!, the second installment of a mid-career retrospective at Lesley Art + Design, celebrating three decades of work by New York artist Scooter LaForge. Curated by Andrew Mroczek, Director of Exhibitions at Lesley Art + Design, it features garments and accessories sourced from private collections, including pieces originally shown at costume designer and stylist Patricia Field’s ARTFashion Gallery and LaForge’s collaborations with Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck, and others.
“This second exhibition of Scooter’s work shines a spotlight on his created and reconstructed garments,” Mroczek explains. “What captivates me most is the work’s integrity—an authentic and seamless progression from Scooter’s paintings and sculptures to these creations. While clothing is, by nature, ephemeral, Scooter’s approach aligns perfectly with his broader artistic vision. It’s this connection that has made his vibrant textile designs sought after by icons like Madonna, Beyoncé, Boy George, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Pop, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Debbie Harry, and Miley Cyrus.”
For over two decades, Scooter LaForge has cemented his place as a defining figure in the downtown New York art scene and an icon of the East Village. His neo-Expressionistic style masterfully bridges the gap between vibrant, cartoon-like aesthetics and profound, often unsettling narratives. Through his dynamic work across media, LaForge constructs a visual language that is at once playful and deeply evocative, inviting viewers to explore the tension between whimsy and introspection embedded in his creations.
