Lesley Art + Design presents The Keeping Place, an exhibition of works by acclaimed artists Letitia and Sedrick Huckaby exploring memory, family, history, and the ways we preserve the presence of those who came before us.
Letitia Huckaby’s Memorable Proof series features twelve textile works depicting contemporary Black women and girls from Edenton, North Carolina, connecting their presence to the history of Harriet Jacobs, who was born into slavery there in 1813 and later authored Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Sedrick Huckaby turns to the intimate territory of family and community through monumental paintings and sculptural works, including portraits of people wearing memorial T-shirts bearing images of loved ones who have died.
Together, the Huckabys transform fabric, photography, pigment, and sculptural form into vessels for memory, reminding us that remembrance is not simply about preserving the past, but ensuring that the people and histories we carry with us continue to have a future.
