Middle School Education (5–8): Initial Teacher License

Master of Education (M.Ed.), on-campus, off-campus, or teacher residency program

Be a positive force in middle school students' lives.

Provide your middle school students with the tools to become successful lifelong learners.

At Lesley, you’ll examine ways to design curriculum and learning environments and effect classroom management strategies. Gain the classroom experience needed to earn your teacher license. And graduate prepared to impact grade 5–8 classrooms from day one.

In our middle school education program, you’ll start with the fundamentals. Begin to understand adolescent development from physical, cultural, and psychological perspectives. Apply theory to your own authentic experiences. Examine learning through a social justice lens as you develop an appreciation of how schools can best serve the needs of this unique age group.

You’ll investigate methods for closing the achievement gap in middle school classrooms. Explore tools for supporting students with special needs and ways to assess student success. Develop a teaching style that promotes creativity and encourages all students to have a voice. And through student teaching, get out into middle school classrooms, where you’ll have the chance to flex and refine your skills.

And you’ll do all of this while furthering your passion and expertise in the content area of your choice. You can select one of seven tracks, all leading to middle school education initial teacher licensure:

  • English (5–8)
  • General Science (5–8)
  • History (5–8)
  • Humanities (5–8)
  • Mathematics (5–8)
  • Mathematics/Science (5–8)
  • Political Science/Political Philosophy (5–8)
