I CAME AS A NANNY. I WAS 19 YEARS O. I JUST GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE AND CAME TO THE COUNTRY TO TAKE CARE OF TWO LITTLE BABIES. A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THAT ABOUT ME. THAT IS MY ENTERING TO THE UNITED STATES. WHEN I GOT TO THE AIRPORT I KANSAS, THE PEOPLE WHO SPONSORED ME HAD MY NAME ON A CARD WAITING FOR ME. THE MINUTE I SAW MY NAME, I BURST OUT AND STARTED CRYING I AM NOT QUITE SURE WHY. KAREN: IT WAS AN EMOTIONAL JOURNEY. TELL US HOW YOU MADE THE TRANSITION FROM NANNY TO CHIEF CARETAKER I THE CORPORATE SUITE. JACKIE: I WAS ALWAYS OF THE MINDSET THAT YOU CAN START SOMEWHERE, BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FINISH THERE. SO, THE FAMILY I WAS WORKING FOR NEW MY FAMILY. THEY KNEW THIS WAS AN ENTRY POINT FOR ME TO GET INTO THE COUNTRY. MY ARRANGEMENT WITH THEM IS TO WORK FOR TWO YEARS. THEN, GO TO MY FAMILY SOMEWHERE ELSE IN THE U.S. I DID MY TWO YEARS. I MOVED BOSTON. MY FIRST JOB WAS AT BOSTON PUBLIC HOSPITAL AS A UNIT CLERK ON THE MATERNITY WARD. THAT WAS A PART-TIME JOB. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. MONDAY TO FRIDAY, I WAS AT THE DEACONESS HOSPITAL AS A UNIT CLERK. I WORKED SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. THAT IS AN IMMIGRANT STORY. I KNEW THAT IN WORKING SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, I WOULD ACCOMPLISH SOME OF THE GOALS I ACCOMPLISHED -- I SET FOR MYSELF. KAREN: WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU ARE VERY DRIVEN, VERY DETERMINED. SINGULARLY FOCUSED. WHILE I WAS WORKING SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, I MET THEN, NOW HUSBAND, THEN BOYFRIEND. I WENT BACK TO SCHOOL. I WAS DOING ALL THESE THINGS TOGETHER. I WENT TO BUNKER HILL COMMUNITY COLLEG TO GET AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE. I KNEW THE DEGREE I CAME TO THIS COUNTRY WITH FROM JAMAICA WAS NOT GOING TO BE VALID. ONCE I FINISHED AT BUNKE HILL, I GOT MARRIED, GOT PREGNAT WHILE I WAS GOING TO EMMANUEL COLLEGE TO GET A FOUR YEAR DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION. HAD ANOTHER BABY. WENT TO LESL UNIVERSITY TO GET A MASTERS DEGREE IN MANAGEMENT AND HR, BRINGING MY SECO BABY TO SCHOOL WITH ME WHEN I HAD TO, AND WORKING A FULL-TIME JOB. KAREN: KEEPING IT MOVING. JACKIE: ALL MOVING WHILE BEING A WIFE AND MOTHER. KAREN: THE BOOK, THE TITLE IS PERFECT. LIFT AS I CLIMB.
