Substance Abuse In The Workplace

Lesley University prohibits the unlawful manufacture, dispensation, use, or distribution of illegal drugs or controlled substances. This prohibition is in effect on Lesley's property, off-campus sites, and while conducting University business away from campus.

The use of alcohol is prohibited at any time in the workplace, with the exception of department or University social functions, and then only by those twenty-one years of age and older.

Depending upon the severity of the condition, if there is reasonable suspicion that an employee is under the influence of alcohol or illegal substance while at work or at a University function, the employee will be transported to her/his home or to a hospital, and referred to the University's Employee Assistance Program.

Reasonable suspicion of behavior indicating that the employee may be under the influence might include, but is not limited to the observation of slurred speech, sleeping on the job, poor balance, loss of concentration, or other like behaviors. It should be noted that these behaviors could also indicate illness, or reactions to medications. Therefore, a supervisor should seek help from Human Resources before taking any action.

Employees convicted of a criminal drug statute are required by federal law to notify the University within five days after the conviction.

The University complies with the Drug Free Workplace Act and violation of this Policy will be grounds for serious discipline actions up to and including termination of employment.
