Frequently Asked Questions

How many credits are required for the Urban Environmental Leadership Program (UEL).
The UEL program is a 32-credit Master of Arts Degree.

How long does the program take to complete?
This program can be completed in 2 years.

What is the program format?
The program begins each summer with a weeklong residency in Boston. Students then register for two courses in both the fall and spring semesters. Over the course of these semesters, the learning cohort meets during four weekends for experiential fieldwork and face-to-face discussions and seminars. In between these sessions, independent reading, research, and self-directed learning are enhanced by an active online component. The second year of the program focuses on action research methods and culminates in an action research project and accompanying thesis during the final spring semester.

When does the next summer residency take place?

July 11 – 17, 2010

Do I need to live in the Boston area to complete this program?
No, many of our students live in other parts of the country. Students are required to be in Boston for the weeklong residency during the first summer and then for one weekend per month in the fall and spring semesters.

What kinds of students does this program attract?
The program attracts a wide range of students with varying professional interests, which is reflective of the interdisciplinary nature of the program. Our current students are interested in careers focusing on education, urban planning, advocacy, urban food systems, urban health demographics, and sustainable construction management.

What can I do with this degree?
No one career path is "typical" for graduates of the program. Alumni can go on to work for nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private businesses.

Is there a thesis requirement?
Yes, students in their final semester complete a final action research project and thesis.
