What is the Graduate School of Arts & Social Sciences (GSASS) Dean's Merit Scholarship?

The GSASS Dean's Merit Scholarship award covers the cost of tuition for two 3-credit course (on-campus programs only), one in the fall and one in the spring semester for each year of the student's Master's program.

An applicant to the Merit Scholarship should have a strong academic background, demonstrated leadership skills, and a commitment to the field of education, the arts, social services, the environment or counseling.

Scholarship Statement

The Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences is dedicated to the fundamental principle that the role of higher education is to develop and nurture a creative, civil, and life-sustaining society. In support of this mission, our programs seek to recruit, encourage and support students who enrich our learning communities with their community or volunteer experiences; professional experiences; life experiences; strong academic achievement; leadership qualities; artistic abilities; and potential to be student ambassadors and later alumni ambassadors.

The Dean’s Merit Scholarship Committee encourages the application of candidates who embody any number of the qualities mentioned above. The Committee and the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences encourage the application of all candidates without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability or veteran status in the administration of its educational policies and scholarships.

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Student must be accepted to an on-campus Graduate School of Arts & Social Sciences Master's program for fall 2009. This includes the low-residency MFA Creative Writing program. This does not include >MFA Visual Arts, PhD Expressive Therapies, and programs offered through our National Programs office.
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of a 3.2 in a previous degree program.
  • Student must maintain full-time status (9 credits or more) in the fall and spring semesters for the duration of the program.
  • Student must maintain an A- (3.7) average in Lesley coursework.
  • Student must submit a complete scholarship application by March 15, 2009 (round I) or May 15, 2009 (round II).

Application Requirements

  • Student must have been accepted to a Master's program for fall 2009 or have a complete admissions packet on file for fall 2009.
  • Student must submit the scholarship application, scholarship essay, and a current resume to the Admissions Office by March 15,2009, (round I) or May 15, 2009 (round II).
