This course offers an in-depth look at how to use Guided Reading in an intermediate classroom. It focuses on observing and analyzing reading behaviors for effective instruction as well as understanding the parts of a Guided Reading lesson and how each element helps students become more effective readers.
Other topics include:
- Improving student achievement through effective small group instruction
- Building an understanding of the reading process
- Learning how to choose and introduce appropriate books for Guided Reading instruction based on assessment data
- Learning how to group students dynamically for Guided Reading instruction
- Identifying characteristics of fiction and nonfiction to teach a variety of genres effectively

This course will take an in-depth look at the teaching of phonics in a primary classroom. It will focus on the nine critical areas of phonics and spelling learning as well as the role of letter-sound relationships in the reading and writing process.
Other topics include:
- Techniques for teaching how letters and words work
- An overview of 100 mini-lessons for K–2 classrooms
- Role of phonological awareness in learning to read and write
- How to use students' reading and writing to assess phonics and spelling knowledge
- Comprehensive spelling system for grades 1–4
- Designing and planning effective word study center activities

This course will take an in-depth look at how to use Guided Reading in the K–2 classroom. It is based on Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell's book: Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children.
Other topics include:
- How to use leveled books
- How to assess a student through the use of running records
- How to match books to a student's reading level
- How to organize and manage your classroom during the Guided Reading lesson
- How to incorporate Shared Reading, Read Aloud, Independent Reading, and literature discussion into the primary classroom
Cost:
Non-credit: $595 per course
Summer 2012 Credit Rate: $870 per credit + a $30 registration fee
- Two-Credit Option: $1,680 + $30 = $1,710
- Three-Credit Option: $2,520 +$30 = $2,550
