Engaging Struggling Readers Through Effective Classroom Practices (Grades K-6)

An exciting four-day professional development experience that will help classroom teachers and learning specialists:
- Build a deeper understanding of texts through authentic talk
- Teach for fluency to increase reading comprehension
- Develop academic language within the content area
- Integrate vocabulary instruction into the reading and writing workshop
- Support English Language Learners in the literate environment
- Tailor instruction toward each reader’s specific needs
Work with noted educators, David Freeman, Yvonne Freeman, Pat Johnson and the faculty from the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative to understand the needs of struggling readers. Build a repertoire of classroom practices that can be used with struggling readers, including English Language Learners, who find reading difficult. Diverse literature will be explored while participants engage in hands-on experiences around vocabulary instruction, fluency, and the important role of talk in developing students’ reading comprehension.

This course will take an in-depth look at how to use guided reading in the K-2 classroom and is based upon Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell's book: Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children.
Other topics include:
- How to look at and use leveled books
- How to assess a student's strengths and needs through the use of running records
- How to match books to a student's reading level
- How to organize and manage your classroom during the guided reading lesson
- How to incorporate shared reading, reading aloud, independent reading, and literature discussion into the primary classroom

This course offers and in-depth look at how to used guided reading in an Intermediate classroom. It will focus on observing and analyzing reading behaviors for effective instruction as well as understanding the parts of a guided reading lesson and how each element helps students become more effective readers.
Other topics include:
- Improving student achievement through effective small group instruction
- Building an understanding of the reading process
- Learning how to choose and introduce appropriate books for guided reading instruction based on assessment data
- Learning how to group students dynamically for guided reading instruction
- Identifying characteristics of fiction and nonfiction in order to effectively teach a variety of genres.

- Role of phonological awareness in learning to read and write
- How to use students' reading and writing to assess phonics and spelling knowledge
