Literacy Coordinator Training
Literacy coordinator training is an in-depth, two-year professional enrichment opportunity for teachers who are deeply committed to literacy.
Training begins after the school-based leadership team has been trained and after the application process for literacy coordinator training has been submitted and accepted (during phase two of implementation). During this phase, the literacy coordinator-in-training learns to implement the language and literacy framework in the classroom and prepares to serve as the school's literacy coordinator and staff developer.
Here is a snapshot of a literacy coordinator's responsibilities through Literacy Collaborative training and implementation:
Training Year Requirements and Responsibilities
- Attend a one-week intensive training seminar during the summer (two weeks for intermediate training)
- Attend four weeks (Sunday through Friday) of an intensive training program during the Fall and Spring semesters
- Attend a two-week leadership training seminar the following summer (July)
- Enroll for nine hours of graduate credit from Lesley University (The literacy coordinator may sign up for an additional three or six hours of graduate credit)
- Attend and complete assignments associated with approximately 15 guided meetings (on-site follow-up discussions with other literacy coordinators) throughout the training year
- Videotape teaching as assigned. Using a structured guidesheet, the literacy coordinator reflects on the lesson and sends the written reflection and videotape to Lesley University for review by the trainers
- Complete all course work assignments successfully
- Implement the Literacy Collaborative framework in a heterogeneous classroom for 2.5 - 3 hours per day, five days per week
- Collect and maintain data on children in accordance with the Lesley University and The Ohio State University Literacy Collaborative guidelines for evaluation
- Attend the Northeast Early Literacy Conference (primary only)
During the field year (year two), the literacy coordinator continues to implement the language and literacy framework in the classroom for 2.5 - 3 hours each day. The literacy coordinator begins to train classroom teachers to use the framework in their own classrooms.
Field Year Requirements and Responsibilities
- Attend four days of professional development at Lesley University
- Develop and implement a year-long staff development training program of 40 - 45 hours for classroom teachers within the school
- Conduct course-related peer coaching of classroom teachers 30 - 50% of the week
- Teach in a heterogeneous classroom within the coordinator's grade level 50 - 70% of the week implementing the Literacy Collaborative framework
- Coordinate data collection and evaluation in accordance with district and Lesley University/Ohio State University guidelines
- Work with the school-based leadership team to plan for and evaluate the implementation of Literacy Collaborative
- Create awareness about the program among stakeholders, including parents, school board and other interested parties
- Attend the Northeast Early Literacy Conference (primary only) and the National Literacy Coordinator Institute in year 3 or 4 (optional after)
After completing the training year and the field year, the literacy coordinator progresses to continued implementation. From this point forward, the literacy coordinator provides staff development and coaching for the school faculty 30 - 50% of the week, teaches in a classroom 50 - 70% of the week, coordinates data collection and analysis, attends the Northeast Early Literacy Conference and the National Literacy Coordinator Institute and attends four days of professional development annually at Lesley University.
