Teaching Writing in the Middle School Classroom
A Writing Workshop Model
Join the Lesley University Middle School Faculty and guest speaker Jeff Anderson Aug. 18-19, 2009 for an exciting two-day institute on teaching writing in the middle school classroom.
Day one will feature guest Jeff Anderson, author of Mechanically Inclined and Everyday Editing. Jeff will work with participants on effective writing strategies for the middle school student. He will also focus on actively engaging students in learning about grammar and editing.
Day two will feature our middle school faculty working with participants around The Continuum of Literacy Learning as a tool for understanding writing behaviors and informing instruction. Part of day two will also include a breakout session. The following choices are available to participants.
- Understanding and Implementing the Writing Workshop in a Middle School Classroom
- Using a Writer's Notebook in Writing Workshop
- Using Mentor Texts to Create Powerful Writing Mini-lessons
- Creating and Teaching Units of Study Around the Writer's Craft
Meet our Faculty Speakers

Mechelle Abney is a faculty member at Lesley University's Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative where she works extensively with Intermediate and Middle School teachers. She has over twenty years of educational experience as a classroom teacher, Title 1 school coordinator, and Reading Recovery teacher. She has also been a Literacy Coach in the primary, intermediate and middle school grades.

Jill Eurich is the assistant director of the Middle School literacy initiatives at the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative. She has worked for Lesley University for 10 years and prior to that was a teacher of the intermediate and middle school grades in Cambridge, Mass.

Margaret Crosby is a faculty member at the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative. She has many years of experience in various capacities in education. She has 27 years of classroom experience ranging from kindergarten to grade eight. She also held the positions of elementary music teacher, curriculum coordinator, university instructor, educational consultant and Reading Recovery Teacher Leader.

Toni Czekanski has been a faculty member at the Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative for eight years. Prior to that she worked as a Reading Recovery teacher, a classroom teacher at both primary and intermediate levels, as a reading specialist and has developed programs for teaching gifted and talented students.
