Peaceable schools & CommunitiesSummer 2009 Course Offering!Explore with us the knowledge, skills, and relationships we need to develop in order to work successfully across generations. In our country today, "change" dominates the headlines, and yet we have few models for "being the real change we want to see." We live in and work in an inter-generational world, and yet we have few models and opportunities for really engaging across generations. The 2008 Obama election campaign was one of the most recent examples of the power and possibility of cross-generational organizing for change. COURSE: EEDUC 6810.30 TITLE: Creating Peaceable Schools & Communities: Connecting Across Generations DATES: July 6 - July 10, 2009 [Times need to be confirmed]
Students taking this course for credit will be expected to have a post-Institute meeting within two weeks after the close of the Institute in order to discuss his/her final project proposal with the professor. FACULTY: Linda Brion-Meisels, Ph.D. CREDITS: 3 graduate credits DESCRIPTION: This course explores a four-part framework for promoting peace and justice in schools and communities. Students leave strengthened and supported for renewed leadership in their own schools and communities, prepared and empowered to use peace-building to create new kinds of leadership. The course and the Institute connect students to resources, and relationships that will support and sustain their professional development. Grounded in the values of Peaceable Schools and Communities, the course and the Institute model offer approaches to peacemaking, inclusion, anti-oppression education and community building. The 2009 Peaceable Schools Summer Institute will focus on organizing for cross-generational change. Course participants will have the opportunity to work directly with high school students as well as professional colleagues, and to apply cross-generational strategies for work with students K-12. Youth today have the potential to greatly affect our society by working with younger children and/or with adults. REGISTRATION: Participants opting to take the summer 2009 course in conjunction with the Institute are required to complete the University's Course Registration Form along with the Institute Registration Form. Both forms can be faxed to (617) 349-8125. SOE certification programs, Educational Administration, and others, check with student advisor for eligibility.
